Northern Isolation and Drone Not Drones Present

LAWRENCE ENGLISH

Northern Isolation and Drone Not Drones are proud to present the debut Minneapolis performance, lecture, and masterclass of the world-renown Australian composer, media artist, and philosopher of listening, Lawrence English.

Working across an eclectic array of aesthetic investigations, English's work prompts questions of field, perception, and memory. He investigates the politics of perception, through live performance and installation, to create works that ponder subtle transformations of space and ask audiences to become aware of that which exists at the edge of perception.

Over the past 10 years, Lawrence English has been one of the leading international voices in field recording. Working extensively across the world, from Antarctica to the Outback and the Amazon to Japan, his recordings display an utterly personal approach informed equally by technique, theoretical investigations, and aesthetic interests.

Can we hear someone listening? What experiential elements are involved in conducting and completing a field recording? Lawrence English strives to answer these questions with his emergent theoretical framework, 'The Listener's Listening' – an approach to listening rooted in affect that reflects the agentive and creative capacities of the listener.

Absorb the depth of sound on the edge of perception learn how to experience heightened listening.

Lawrence will present a mesmerizing live performance, his unparalleled research in listening, and conceptual and practical approaches to field recording. The program is as follows:
